The protection of global resources is controversial because the development of an advanced industrial society involves the exploitation of natural resources to produce goods and services for world market.

 

-So, how can we balance the resource needs of industrial society with the natural environment?

 

 

 

The Tragedy of the Commons

This parable shows how many individuals each acting rationally, can destroy the very resources that sustain them all.

 

 

 

Alternative strategies

 

Authoritative Body

 

They could create an authoritative body to regulate the commons

However, this strategy can be successful only if the body is interested in to preserve the commons, not in protecting the interest of the powerful sheep owner.

to individuals.

 

Individuals have incentives to care for their own property, so they try to preserve their land in the best condition.

In this case, environmental costs should be managed by international environmental regimes

Feminists see the environmental protection as futile (They don’t much value on protection.)
